People use the Money Weight Calculator to:
make sense of a headline
When the news mentions a million, a billion, or a budget line, this tool turns that figure into a weight, a volume and a picture you can actually imagine.
see what $1 million looks like
One million dollars in $100 bills is 100 bundles of $10,000. Spread out on an office desk it is a single layer about 1 cm high, and it weighs about 10 kg (22 lb).
compare famous sums
A million, a billion and a trillion are only three zeros apart on paper. In cash, a million fits on a desk, a billion takes ten pallets, and a trillion covers almost two football pitches.
check what it takes to carry it
See whether a sum fits in a briefcase, a suitcase or a car trunk, or needs vans and trucks - counting both the space the notes take and the weight they put on the vehicle.
illustrate a story
Writers, teachers and creators download the picture and put it next to an abstract dollar amount, so readers are not left guessing the scale.
learn orders of magnitude
Students drag the slider from thousands to trillions and watch the cash grow from one bundle to a field of pallets, instead of treating the numbers as similar-looking words.

The amount is stored in the link, so you can send someone exactly the sum you were looking at.
FAQ
How much does $1 million weigh?
In $100 bills, $1 million is 10,000 notes, or 100 bundles of $10,000. Each bill weighs about 1 gram, so the whole sum weighs about 10 kg (22 lb).
How much space does $1 million take up?
About 11 liters (0.4 cubic feet), so it fits in an ordinary 15-liter briefcase. Stacked in a single pile the notes would stand about 1.1 m (3.6 ft) tall; laid out on an office desk they make one layer of 100 bundles.
How much does $1 billion weigh?
About 10 metric tons (11 US tons): 10 million $100 bills taking up about 11 cubic meters. That is ten Euro pallets holding $100 million each, or about half of a truck's payload.
How much does $1 trillion weigh?
About 10,000 metric tons, or 10,000 pallets of $100 million. Laid out side by side, one pallet high, they cover almost two football pitches.
How big is a $100 bill and a bundle of them?
A US $100 bill is 156 × 66 mm (6.14 × 2.61 in), about 0.11 mm thick and weighs about 1 g. Banks band 100 of them into a $10,000 bundle with a mustard-colored strap; a bundle is about 1.1 cm thick and weighs about 100 g.
Why does the calculator use $100 bills?
The $100 is the largest US note in circulation, so large sums are almost always counted, stored and moved in hundreds. In smaller notes the same sum weighs more: $1 million in $20 bills is 50,000 notes, about 50 kg.
Are the weights and sizes exact?
They use the official figures of the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing: a note is 6.14 × 2.61 inches (156 × 66 mm), 0.0043 inches (0.11 mm) thick and weighs about 1 gram, so 454 notes make a pound. The weight is simply the number of bills times 1 gram, which keeps the error at the same few percent for any amount. Real bundles vary a little with wear, humidity and the paper bands, which add about half a gram per 100 bills. The picture is drawn to scale, but the bill artwork is stylized, not a reproduction of the note.
