5% Grey Screen for OLED Uniformity

Very dark grey slides (5–10%) are how reviewers check OLED panels for near-black uniformity: vertical banding, blotches, or a tinted patch. Move the slider under the preview to 5%, go fullscreen in a dark room, and look across the whole screen.

Dirty Screen Effect on TVs and Monitors

A 20–50% grey screen shows the dirty screen effect (DSE): darker patches or a "dirty window" look that you otherwise notice only when the camera pans across a sports field or snow.

Clouding and Uneven Brightness on LCDs

A black screen shows backlight bleed at the edges; a mid-grey screen shows clouding and uneven brightness across the middle of the panel. Use both for a complete check.

Plain, Dark, or Light Grey Background

50% grey has no color cast, so it works as a neutral background for photos, video thumbnails, and design mockups. Move the slider for a dark or light grey, choose a resolution up to 8K, and download it as a PNG.

Softer Light Than a White Screen

A mid or light grey screen gives even, low-glare light when a white screen is too harsh — for example, as a dim screen at night.

FAQ

Is it grey or gray?

Both are correct and mean the same color: "grey" is the usual British spelling and "gray" the American one. This page shows a neutral #808080 grey by default.

What does 5% grey mean?

It means 5% brightness: a very dark grey (#0D0D0D) just above black. It is used to check near-black uniformity, especially on OLED screens, where problems show up first at very low brightness.

Which grey shade should I use for a uniformity test?

Use 5% and 10% for near-black uniformity on OLED, and 20–50% for clouding and the dirty screen effect on LCD and OLED TVs. Test in a dark room with the screen in fullscreen.

Can I choose my own shade of grey?

Yes. Move the slider under the preview from 0% (black) to 100% (white), or pick any color with the color picker. The page remembers your last shade, and the link in the address bar opens the same shade on another device.

Can I download a grey background image?

Yes. Choose a resolution (up to 8K) next to the preview and press Download to save a PNG in the current shade.

How do I go fullscreen?

Click anywhere on the screen or press F to enter fullscreen, and press Esc to exit.
